村井：あなたの音楽は、ある意味でとても「アメリカ的」だと思います。それも東部のニューヨークではなく、コロラドあたりの中西部の、大農場の建物の破風や、広大な風景とか、30年代から50年代ぐらいの時代を感じさせたりもするのですが、ご自分ではそれを意識していますか？
Murai：I think your music is in a sense very american, and it’s even … it does not necessarily remind us of eastern New York, but, let us say, of a huge ranch gable, or vast landscape in the Midwestern state of Colorado. And it also gives us the flavor of the times from the 30’s until 50’s. Are you yourself conscious of those things?

ビル：そうですね、と言うか、自分自身は特に自分を一人のアメリカ人に仕立てようと考えている訳ではありませんが、今ではそれを意識しています。と言うのも、アメリカはまさに私の出身地だからです。出身地であり、かつ私の全てなのです。でもそのことについて何か特別に考察するというようなことではありません。私がアメリカ人であるということは、単純に生まれ持って身についた自然なことなのです。私はテレビやエレクトリックギターと共に、50年代に成長しました。その間にフェンダーのテレキャスターが誕生し、また私が誕生したというわけです。ですから相互の影響関係というものは、全くもって自然なことのように思えます。
B.F.：Well, I mean, I'm not trying to make me an American, but I think it now, because it's just where I come from. That's where I come from, and it's everything I know, but it's not like a thinking about it. I mean it's just natural. I grew up, you know, in the fifty's in the middle of the United States with television and electric guitar. During the times, you know, the Fender Telecaster was born, and at the same time I was born. It kind of all, just seems natural.

益子：あなたのCDジャケットの多くには古い写真が使われている一方、日本ではあなたの音楽は例えば「郷愁を誘う架空のアメリカ風物詩」などと呼ばれたり しています。そうした写真はあなたの音楽と何か関係があるのでしょうか？
Masuko：Many of your CD jackets use old pictures, and in Japan, your music is called like “nostalgic, but fictional Americana.” Do those pictures have something to do with your music?

ビル：と言うか、大抵の場合、ジャケの写真はレコード会社が選んだ風景なんです。だいたいは気に入ってますが、つねに自分の理想の写真という訳ではありません。
B.F.：I mean, many times the photo is the outlook the record company chooses, and usually I like them, but it's not always my ideal photo.

村井：最後に、現在進行中の、あるいは予定されているプロジェクトについて教えてください。次のアルバムの予定はありますか？
Murai：Could you tell me about the ongoing or scheduled project? Are you going to release a new album?

ビル：ええ、あります。実は写真と関係したものなんです。「彼」は1959年に死んだんですが、アーカンソーの山間部のたいへん小さな町の出身でね。非常に変わった男でした。30年代から40年代にかけて、この小さな町のあらゆる人の写真を撮っていたんです。彼は小さなスタジオを持っていましたが、窓を直射日光に対して閉ざし、北側の自然な間接光を取り入れ、いつも同じタイプの写真を撮っていました。町の普通の人々の写真をたくさんね。それからその写真を小さなカードにしていました。ほとんど一人か二人の人がつい立てを背にただ立っているだけの写真です。そして彼は死に、全く忘れ去られたのです。十数年の時が経って(1974)、それは再び世に見出され、その素晴らしさが評価されました。そこで私は、この一件に関して曲を書いてみたのです。ある部分は写真を素材にしました。しかし、彼はまた誰にも好まれないといった変人でもありました。全く孤独でした。彼は一晩中起きていることがありました。真夜中に木陰に隠れて、とつぜん飛び出して来たり、小さな子供たちをおびえ上がらせたのです。本当に奇人でした。そんな訳で、これは彼にまつわる風変わりなお話の一端です。まあとにかく、私は「彼」に刺激されて曲を作りました。彼の写真やその他の素材を使った小さな本が出来上がりました。書名は「ディスファーマー」（＝非農民）。これって彼の名前 (Mike Disfarmer) なんですよ。7月に出版される予定です。
B.F.：Oh ye, actually for photos. “He” died in 1959, and he's from Arkansas, in the mountains, like very, very small place. And he's a very strange man, and he took photos of all the people in this small town from like 1930s and 40s. He had a small studio with the window closed against the direct sun, open in the natural north light, always taking the same type of picture, and he took many, many photos of just the people in the town, and then made little cards of the picture, usually just one or two people just standing against the screen, and then he died, and everyone forgot him, and then a dozen years later they found his photos, which they thought incredible. So I wrote music sort of about this, partly from the photos. But also he was very strange person like no one liked him. He was completely alone, and he would stay up all night, in the middle of the night, would hide, hide behind the tree, and jump out of it, scared the little children, really strange person he is, so it's a weird story about him. So anyway I made music kind of inspired by this man, and they made a little book with all the photos and stuffs. It's titled “Disfarmer”. This is his name. I think it's coming out in July.
